Well it’s pretty clear the debt reduction is the most popular choice for what to do with our windfall! It’s great reading everyones thoughts and it has been good to spend some time thinking about our priorities and also what we’re aiming for in all this – a simpler life.

So we’ve had lots of discussions and I feel more focused about where we are headed and how to get there. It will take a few weeks for my tax money to arrive and when it does we have decided to put it in savings while we make up our mind exactly how to spend it. Rhitter posted a really helpful link? about Suze’s advice when you recieve a windfall, and several people suggested splitting the money. between the emergency fund and the debt and even the van.
.
I think that debt fatigue is a real problem when people have large amounts to pay off. For quite a while it felt good to log into my account each payday and just transfer money towards debt payments. It would be in the account for a matter of minutes. Now the novelty of that has well and truly worn off. I wish I was transferring that money to savings! I guess I’m a bit tired of not doing anything or going anywhere. My only excitement is decluttering!

The only spending area left to cut back on is food, and I’m not going to eat poor quality food to save money. So we need to just keep poking along, keep ourselves motivated ( I’ve been reading all those debt free stories again)and get this done!

I’ve updated the debt totals. I’ve been making extra payments to GoMastercard for a while now and it’s down to $3810. It will definetely be paid off before the end of November.

Anyone else feeling a bit ‘debt fatigued’ at the moment?

?Back from a few long days on the road. I spent $24 on coffee & snacks while I was away. Exactly what I’m trying not to do! But my weak moments are when I’m tired and on the road, I grab a coffee and a chocolate. I’ll do better next time. Then we had takeout last night, I was just buggered when I got home… Chinese Food $42.40.? Of course there’s leftovers from it, but still…. I’ve spent money on food I didn’t plan for.

I have two full days of meeting again today and tomorrow. Sigh….? Well I guess at least I get free food for two days!

Last night I paid all the regular monthly payments, all the bills due for August and some extra off debt. A total of $1364 went towards debt reduction. The good thing is that I have three paydays in August, so my next two pay packets will be a HUGE snowflake payment on the GoMastercard.

The house next door sold this week. In the last 12 months both our neighbours have sold for a very similar price $360 – $364,000. The house across the road is still on the market after 12 months. They have $380,00 on it which is overpriced as it’s the smallest one of the four, and it has no views like the rest of us do.? Five years ago our house was valued at $383,000. But it needs a lot of work to get it ready to sell. We had been aiming at this time next year. I’d love to do it sooner but we still need to get this debt down a bit more before spending on the house.

So, you can try out some practicable ways for debt reduction rather than trying out some hard ways that will only ding your credit and frustrate you. There are various such practicable or rather attainable ways or may be easy ways in which you can work towards debt reduction. But for that you need to be true to yourself and follow some strict disciplines.

Practicable ways to pay off debts

Some of the practicable ways that you can use to minimize your debs and pay those off are:

1. Budgeting – One of the most practicable ways to reduce debt is budgeting. Budgeting actually helps you to get an idea about your income and your expenditures and thus you will be able to save money on your expenditures. But you will have to be true to yourself and maintain the expenditure level only as per your affordability. You will have to keep in mind that the money which you are able to save through budgeting. Moreover, you can also maintain low debt level if you expend as per your affordability.

2. Frugal living – Frugal living helps you save more than you can usually do. However, it does not mean that you will have to give up on all of your likings and that you will have to become a miser. It is rather like giving up on unnecessary indulgences and lowering expenditures through some wise shopping strategies. Using discount coupons and stockpiling helps you in saving lots of dollars. Buying gasoline in the early morning or in the night saves money as you get more gasoline at same cost because it remains dense during cool weather.

3. Lowering usage of credit cards – Lowering the usage of credit cards also is a practicable way to reduce your debts and maintain the debt level. Credit cards are revolving credit and have high interest rates and so it is best to avoid using credit cards as much as possible. Moreover, credit cards are mainly for emergency purposes and so these should be kept for your emergency purpose itself.

4. Making more than one payment – You can also achieve practicable debt reduction by making more than one payment per month. This mode of payment is known as the snowflake method as you are making small (light) payments but more than one payment each month to chip off your debt. This helps you to reduce debt and also pay it off early and save money on the interest.

5. Checking credit reports – Checking your credit report is important too, in case of debt reduction. You may be able to find out some debt which are in no way valid and you may also be able to find some wrong listings on your credit reports. This works towards increasing debt amount and thus it is in your best regards to check your credit reports.

So, you can follow the above practicable debt reduction methods to both reduce and pay your debts.

A proper management of finances and debts becomes tough and really bad when you don’t have a job. This is indeed a very tough situation when you might find yourself in a very hapless position. At one hand you need to look for a job in order to provide for yourself and your family and on the other hand, you also need some ways to pay off debt. This dual management is tricky but not impossible. With the help of credit counseling and a better management of finances, you can easily get yourself out of this financial mess.

4 Ways to manage finances when you do not have a job

In case you are laid off a job and have to make ends meet, every decision that you make would be extremely crucial and important. This is not the time to make a decision in a haste. You need to maintain a particular positive outlook, until you get your next job. Credit counseling would only help in this case, when you maintain an optimistic attitude to life. Read on to know about some of the ways which you can take help of so as to properly manage your debts and finances in these hard times.

1. Cut down expenses and plan a budget – A budget would be your best friend when you have debts to pay but no job. You need to completely eradicate expenses that aren’t necessary. You should budget your funds and just buy the daily necessities like groceries, food items, etc. You need to stick to the budget strictly so that you can sustain your family as well as manage your debts.

2. Negotiate with your creditors – You need to speak to your creditors and inform them that you have been laid off and try to defer your debt payments by a few months.

3. Get a part time job – Taking up a part time job, when you have been laid off, is one of the best ideas ever. The job might not be as good as the one that you had but at least some money inflow would always help you manage your finances. It’s better to have a little amount than not having anything at all.

4. Prioritize the bills - When you don’t have a job, you need to prioritize your bills and decide which one to pay first. This is something that would always help you manage your finances. Start paying off with the most important bill and it’s suggested that you pay for food and medical expenses first followed by the mortgage bills and then the car/gas bills. Make sure you put aside some amount every month with which you would pay your debts.

Creating an emergency fund is a very important financial decision that can see you through during times of financial crunch. When you have an emergency fund, you would be able to sustain yourself and your family in case you ever lose the job. It is recommended that you save enough money to last you for at least three months. In order to create such an emergency fund, you need to have a strong discipline and keep an amount of money aside from every month’s income.

————————————-

Jason Holmes is a regular writer with Debt Consolidation Care and is also a contributory writer with other financial sites. His expertise is woven around various aspects of the debt industry and with his e-books he tries to impart to people the different situations and simple solutions to get out of difficult situations. Some of his works include e-books like ‘Credit Score The Quintessential Therapy for a Happy Pocket’, Take Creditors and Collection Agencies to Small Claims Court’ and, My Story- From Depression To a Smile’.

On Friday I was feeling so optimistic and excited about our finances, (having all the bills paid, an emergency fund, paying off debt), that I decided to leave work at lunch time and go and see Dad for the weekend. I’m so glad that I did. He looks remarkably well and is much more content and happy in his new nursing home.

We had a great time together. He chuckled and laughed a lot and we enjoyed a drive out to the ocean. I really thought that he would never be able to go out in the car again. He is confused, can’t follow a conversation and speaks in word salads much of the time, but he is much more contented and calm now.?

He holds my hand tight, tells me I am a ‘nice lady’ and even though he doesn’t quite know who I am, when we were laughing? I saw those flashes of recognition on his face, that somewhere in there he knows something about me, that I belong to him in some way. It’s in his eyes sometimes, little expressions he has, the love in his eyes. I just treasure those fleeting moments. they have been few and far between over the last year.?

So I had a great weekend and I’m really glad I went. I’m back, fresh, ready to get back into debt reduction. The trip cost us $65 in petrol and $70 for food. The memories and photos, free, but? priceless!!!

There’s something like a line of gold thread running through a man’s words when he talks to his daughter, and gradually over the years it gets to be long enough for you to pick up in your hands and weave into a cloth that feels like love itself.??
